She lives and works in Wales and, as an adult learner originally from England, has become a fluent speaker of the Welsh language and a strong supporter of Welsh culture.

Helen's husband Sid, despite being born and bred in Wales, has only a rudimentary grasp of the language but is fortunate in being able to subcontract household linguistic duties to his more articulate partner.

Helen travels widely in the UK, Europe and North America in connection with her work and has extensive international science collaborations.

She is the current (2006-07) Times Crossword Champion, a title she has held previously (1995).
