In embryogenesis

In most angiosperms the first mitotic division of the zygote following fertilisation results in two cells. One is destined to divide further and become the embryo. The other may undergo a few rounds of mitosis and form the suspensor, which eventually degenerates as a consequence of programmed cell senescence and death.
